The following program tracks qualify graduates to teach in the secondary grades or K-12 in particular subject areas. Many of these programs are jointly offered through other departments on campus, but all lead to teacher licensure for each subject area.

Recognizing that interest in human development often goes beyond direct classroom teaching, the Helen DeVos College of Education offers several degrees that address these interests. These degrees concentrate on typical and atypical human development but also include specialty areas such as business, Asian studies, deaf studies, and special education. They are increasingly popular and offer an excellent foundation for entry into many professions and for the pursuit of graduate degrees in related fields.

Students can pursue undergraduate-level degrees in the following areas:

Exercise science prepares students for careers in fitness/wellness, health education and athletic training. In addition to major classes, Lee offers a variety of activity, sport, and lifetime fitness classes. Our faculty are passionate about developing relationships with students to guide and inform their experience. They are expert educators with not only academic credentials but also real world experience, from seasoned professional athletic trainers with at least fifteen years of clinical experience, to exercise science faculty with decades of teaching experience and certification in personal training and strength and conditioning. In all areas, our professors create opportunities for students to do hands-on projects in the community that bridge the classroom to real life - it’s simply a great way to learn.

The Graduate Studies in the Helen DeVos College of Education address both initial licensing and advanced degrees in our MAT and MEd programs.  Our Educational Specialist and Educational Doctorate programs are designed to provide expertise in advanced educational goals.  Grounded in a tradition of academic excellence, our outstanding faculty provide leadership principles and give our candidates the tools needed to be successful in their educational careers.  Teachers who have been hired by a school system but lack initial licensure (job-embedded) are welcomed into our MAT program.

With over 30 endorsement areas offered, our nationally and state accredited program seeks to produce candidates who are:  

Lifelong learners (display a broad general background in liberal education),  

Effective educators (demonstrate thorough preparation in specific academic disciplines; plan and teach effectively), and  

Ethical practitioners (view teaching as an area of Christian service)

The Disaster and Healthcare Mission Management Minor provides students with a working knowledge of the components of the DHMM Major, and will benefit students interested in participating with humanitarian healthcare teams in times of local, national, or international need. BSN Nursing students and other students across campus may enroll in the DHMM Minor.
