The following program tracks qualify graduates to teach in the secondary grades or K-12 in particular subject areas. Many of these programs are jointly offered through other departments on campus, but all lead to teacher licensure for each subject area.

Capstone

The Capstone course is designed to help graduating students integrate their faith with the academic knowledge they have gained throughout their studies. It is regarded as the final reflection of the essential Core Values of Lee University.

Home/Location

The major seeks to pursue experiential learning opportunities. This translates to taking classroom content into personal fitness routines, and exercise leadership in Matrix MX4 HIIT classes in the recreation center. 

Internships/Practicum

Lee University partners with the local YMCA, individually owned fitness facilities, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Tennessee corporate fitness facility, and Lee Flames Strength and Conditioning Center.

Research/Competition

  • The Department is involved in research with the Cleveland Fire Department, tracking hydration levels during Rookie training school and live fire training drills. 
  • Lee partners with NCAA DII athletic teams such as women’s soccer, tracking wellness scales, recovery scales, and rate of perceived exertion following practice and competition. 
  • Students have presented their research at Southeast College of Sports Medicine, Tennessee Athletic Trainers’ Society conferences, and National Athletic Trainers Association meetings. 

Further Study

Students completing this degree program are ideally situated to continue in Lee’s Master of Science in Athletic Training

The Exercise Science major is geared toward preparing students to serve in several fields such as helping individuals at every stage of life through Personal Training, or aiding athletes at any age improve performance as a Strength and Condition Coach. Students engage in course that include the study of human anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, kinesiology, exercise program development, and experiential learning opportunities during their internship.

Classroom/Location

The major seeks to pursue experiential learning opportunities. This translates to taking classroom content into personal fitness routines, and exercise leadership in Matrix MX4 HIIT classes in the recreations center. 

Faculty utilize experiential learning opportunities in class by learning proper form and technique of over 100 exercises in the campus recreation center. Students use the Polar Beat App and Polar Heart Rate Monitors (HRM) to study physiological changes and adaptations during various forms and intensities of exercise. They also utilize the HRM to develop a 10-week workout program to meet personal fitness goals. Students are introduced to the concepts of movement and mobility assessment using Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and Y-Balance Test.  Students also use the InBody 770 to analyze body composition.

Research/Competition

The Department faculty are involved in research with the Cleveland Fire Department. Research has included studies on hydration status during Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) training during Rookie School and investigating changes in mobility initiated by personal protective gear and SCBA.

Research has been presented at the Southeastern American College of Sports Medicine conferences. The Department also supports the training and development of McNair Scholars who have gone on to Graduate Schools. Marisa Villafuerte – ’17 Masters in Exercise Science Georgia Southern University, Jacob Wagner – ’20 – Master Athletic Training – University of South Carolina.

Gulf Conference

Sport Management prepares students for the business side of recreation and athletics. Students will take courses such as Sport Law, Sport Coaching Administration, Facilities & Event Management, and a variety of other business and communication courses. Since the program began in 2016, Sport Management at Lee continuously evolves to meet the trends within dynamic sport professions. This program is heavily integrated with other academic disciplines on campus, which allows students to receive integrated instruction from other professors in communications, business, and coaching, as well as traditional sport management instructors. Students are required to complete three experiential learning courses, including an internship. The internship allows students to gain much needed hands-on experience and networking within their chosen sport sector. Students' interests range from event management, game operations, sport marketing, sport sales, coaching, journalism, sport agency, interscholastic or intercollegiate administration, and more.

What to Expect

Travel/Global Trips

In the past, students in the College of Education have enjoyed visits to the Philippines and England, but these trips have been paused since the Pandemic. We do plan to return international trips back to the program, but in the meantime, we have focused on local trips to the Mercedes Benz stadium in Atlanta and venues around Cleveland and Chattanooga. We plan to continue and expand our domestic trips while we revamp our international travel programs.

Service

Sport Management majors provide service hours to both the local and campus community. Through the required field experience courses, many students spend time helping Lee Athletics with game day operations and events, while others secure positions as team managers with Lee athletic teams. The Cleveland-Chattanooga area also provides ample opportunity for students to serve local middle and high school sport and county recreation programs as assistant coaches and/or sport officials.

The Sport Management program is housed in the Helen Devos College of Education.

Internships/Practicum

Internships are a core part of the sport management degree program. Each student must complete a 150-hour practicum. This can be at a variety of organizations such as: Chattanooga Lookouts, High Point Climbing and Fitness, Cleveland YMCA, Bradley County Parks & Recreation, Cleveland High School, Bradley High School, Lee University athletics, and Cleveland State Community College. Students are free to propose other sites if they meet the parameters of the internship.
