Zeltsman to Visit Campus
Lee University will welcome Nancy Zeltsman, marimba performer and teacher, to campus March 19-20 to lead a masterclass and as guest artist for “Marimba Madness,” a percussion studio concert. The masterclass will take place at 8 p.m. on Saturday and the concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Both events will take place in Pangle Hall.
Sunday’s concert will also feature students from the percussion studio of Dr. Andy Harnsberger, assistant professor of music and percussion coordinator at Lee.
According to Fanfare Magazine, “Zeltsman’s subtle use of phrasing techniques often match the best singers of art songs.” She has presented recitals and marimba classes across the United States, Europe, China, Japan, and Mexico. Venues include the Tanglewood Festival of Contemporary Music, Znakel Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, and Shenzhen Concert Hall.
Since 1993, Zeltsman has taught at The Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music. For the past 15 years, she has been artistic director of the Zeltsman Marimba Festival, an annual two-week seminar held in a different location each summer. In 2013, she was appointed as regular guest professor at Conservatorium van Amsterdam, where she teaches two weeks each year.
She is the author of a method book, “Four Mallet Marimba Playing: A Musical Approach for All Levels.” She also edited “Intermediate Masterworks for Marimba.” She served as a jury member for the TROMP International Percussion Competition in Eindhoven (the Netherlands) in 2010, 2012, and 2014.
Zeltsman’s recordings include three solo CDs, three CDs with Marimolin, William Thomas McKinley’s marimba concerto recorded with Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and a duo marimba CD with Jack Van Green.
Zeltsman graduated from the New England Conservatory of Music with a degree in percussion performance. She resides in Boston, Massachusetts.
