Wind Ensemble To Present Two Concerts This Month

Events, Music, News

The Lee University Wind Ensemble will present two concerts this month, under the direction of conductor Dr. David Holsinger. The Woodwind Choir will perform on Monday, Nov. 9, and the Brass Choir on Thursday, Nov. 12. Both performances will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center on Lee’s campus, along with being livestreamed.

The Woodwind Choir consists of 20 musicians and will feature the works of Percy Grainger, Ernst Krenek, Carl Orff, and Maurice Ravel. The Brass Choir, comprising 21 musicians, will feature the works of William Hines, Karel Husa, Austin Ralphson, and Leslie Stuart.

According to Holsinger, professor of music at Lee, both ensembles will also perform formidable works of George Frederic Handel and Dmitri Shostakovich, specially transcribed for this performance.

“I have been stretched with efforts adapting larger works to these instrumentations this semester,” said Holsinger. “They are not necessarily ensembles that composers are attracted to, for the simple reason that they are usually not considered primary ensembles in the concert world, but I will admit it has been an exciting and fruitful endeavor writing for these musicians.”

The Lee University Wind Ensemble is committed to the highest level of performance of instrumental ensemble literature for winds and percussion. It is a non-traveling group that performs for special concerts on the Lee University campus.

In the interest of everyone’s health and safety, masks and temperature screenings will be required at all live events.

Both events are free, but due to COVID-19 capacity regulations, seating is limited and tickets are required and can be found on Showclix.

Performances will also be livestreamed.
