Wind Ensemble to Perform Tuesday
The Lee University Wind Ensemble will present a concert on Tuesday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center, under the direction of Dr. David Holsinger, professor of music at Lee and director of the ensemble.
The evening’s performance will feature a variety of works, beginning with “Emperata Overture” by Claude T. Smith, “In Praise of Gentle Pioneers” by Holsinger, and “Yo Soy Maria” from the dramatic opera “Maria de Buenos Aires” by Astor Piazzola.
The ensemble will also present Peter Meechan’s “Letters for Home,” a three-movement work commissioned by the East Lancashire Concert Band. According to Holsinger, this tense, emotional piece was written to commemorate the start of World War I and the role played by the United Kingdom forces from the Lancashire area.
“Dance Rhythms,” by Wallingford Riegger, and “The Honored Dead,” by John Philip Sousa, a piece arranged in honor of President Ulysses S. Grant’s death in 1885, will also be performed.
Additionally, the evening will include a four-movement work by Gustav Holst, “Second Suite in F.” Written in 1911, this piece represents one of the first masterworks for Winds in the 20th century. Holsinger says both it and its precursor, “Suite in E-flat,” are staples in the repertoire of modern wind bands.
The concert will conclude with John Philip Sousa’s “Powhatan’s Daughter,” a march written as a salute to Pocahontas and for the Jamestown Exposition of 1907.
The Lee University Wind Ensemble is committed to the highest level of performance of instrumental ensemble literature for winds and percussion. It is a non-travelling ensemble that performs for special concerts on the Lee University campus throughout the year.
