Dr. Christine Williams, an associate professor of theatre at Lee, was recently elected as research and development representative of the Theatre as a Liberal Art Focus Group (TLA) of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE).

The focus group brings together theatre educators who are interested in how theatre serves liberal arts universities. TLA is the second largest focus group in ATHE.

Williams was reelected into the position for a two-year term at the group’s annual meeting in August. During her term, Williams will focus on researching the possibility of adding an online journal for scholarly articles pertaining to the teaching of theatre in a liberal arts setting.

Williams joined the Lee faculty in 2007 and since has directed several student productions such as “The Chairs,” “The Trojan Women,” “An Ideal Husband,” “The Last Night of Ballyhoo,” “The Winter’s Tale,” “My Fair Lady” and “Tartuffe.”

She has worked as a director, producer or designer on more than 20 college, church and community theatre productions including “Little Women,” “The Bald Soprano,” “Taming of the Shrew” and “Man of La Mancha.” As an actor, she has performed in plays such as “How I Learned to Drive” at the Toledo Repertoire and as a voice actor for the Colla Marionette’s U.S. production of “Guerrino Detto il Meschino” at the Spoleto International Arts Festival.

Williams has published several articles and book reviews on Tudor theatre history and other areas of theatre in journals such as Shakespeare and Renaissance Selected Papers, Church History, Christianity and Theatre and Quidditas, as well as presented papers at national and regional conferences.
