Dr. Mark Wickam was recently named Lee Universitys Helen DeVos College of Education Alumnus of the Year.
“For more than 30 years, Dr. Mark Wickam has been a source of stability and an exceptional example of spirit-filled service as a teacher, coach, advisor, and mentor in the Helen DeVos College of Education,” said Dr. Mike Iosia, chairperson of the Department of Health, Exercise Science and Secondary Education.
Wickam graduated from Lee in 1976 and returned to his alma mater in 1987 to serve as an instructor and athletics coach. He is now a professor of health and exercise science. Over the course of his academic career, Wickam has served as director of field experiences, department chair, and faculty athletics representative. In 2017, Wickam was presented with Lee University’s Excellence in Advising Award.
A member of the Lee Athletics Hall of Fame, Wickam was the first coach for Lee’s volleyball team, as well as the men’s and women’s tennis programs. As the men’s tennis head coach, he amassed a 113-73 record, five TVAC championships, two NAIA national tournament appearances and first place in the 1997 NCCAA National Invitational Tournament. He was also named the TVAC Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year in 1995. He led the women’s team to a two-year record of 12-9 and a TVAC Co-Championship in 1991.
“Dr. Wickam represents what is best about Lee University and what it stands for,” said Iosia. “He is a man of deep faith in his Savior and the work of the Holy Spirit in his life that led to a lifetime of serving others, students, staff, coaches, and faculty.”
Wickam earned his Doctor of Arts from Middle Tennessee State University, his Master of Education from University of Southwestern Louisiana, and his Bachelor of Science from Lee.
With his wife Lorri, Wickam has two daughters, Mallory and Madison, both Lee alumnae. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with family and traveling. He and his family attend Westmore Church of God.
Wickham received the award at the College of Education departmental dessert reception on November 5 and, along with the other department award winners, was honored during the Homecoming basketball games the following day.
