TAC Grant Awarded to Lee Theatre

News

Lee University recently received the Tennessee Arts Commission (TAC) Grant for the fourth consecutive year. The grant will be used to bring Tanglewood Marionettes to Lee.

Lee will host a public performance of Tanglewood’s “Cinderella” on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. There will also be daytime showings that week for the local schools.

“We are very excited to host area schoolchildren and families for the fourth year in a row,” said Associate Professor of Theatre Dr. Christine Williams. “This grant has given us the opportunity to provide high-quality theatre for our local children and families. It is very exciting to have a theatre full of young audience members enjoying the magic of theatre.”

Tanglewood Marionettes is a nationally touring marionette theater based in New England. Founded in 1993, the theatre integrates hand-crafted marionettes, colorful sets, lighting and sound to create a fully immersive theatrical experience.

“Cinderella,” a Tanglewood Marionettes showpiece, is set in the 18th century and features 12 costumed 30-inch marionettes. The production combines wit and style to add a few new twists to the classic fairy tale. “Cinderella” is recommended for grade levels K-6.

Lee’s opportunity to host such performers as Tanglewood Marionettes is due, in part, to the Tennessee Arts Commission, funded under an agreement with the State of Tennessee.

Created in 1967, The TAC stimulates and encourages the presentation of performing, visual and literary arts throughout the state and encourages public interest in the cultural heritage of Tennessee.

The Commission has encouraged excellence in artistic expression through the state’s artists and arts organizations. That commitment has grown through the years to ensure that the citizens of Tennessee have access to and the opportunity to participate in the arts.

Tickets will be available in the Dixon Center Box Office for $5.
