The Lee University Symphonic Band will present a special concert of Wind Band music under the baton of Dr. Mark Bailey, professor of music at Lee. The event will take place on Tuesday, March 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center.

The ensemble will perform an eclectic concert of band classics, including several selections from the worship music repertoire the ensemble regularly presents in churches across America.

The program, “Songs of Joy from our Cultural Heritage and Faith,” will feature works by Rimsky- Korsakov, Hazo, Curnow, Karrick, Curriale, and David Holsinger, conductor of Lee’s wind ensemble and resident composer at the university.

Lee’s Symphonic Band has performed at leading churches across America and conferences such as the Christian Instrumentalists and Directors Association National Conference and the Atlanta Instrumental Expo Conference, the largest instrumental church music conference in America.

The band has also performed at numerous concert festivals, appeared on television and radio, headlined important university events, and toured ten foreign countries including the Bahamas, Botswana, Brazil, Guatemala, Jordan, Mexico, South Africa, Trinidad, Cuba and China. This concert is presented in preparation for the group’s spring tour of Ohio, Kentucky and Illinois.

The Lee University Symphonic Band is the only American collegiate band to perform in the nation of Jordan, and it was the first collegiate concert band to perform in the nation of Cuba since Fidel Castro took control in 1959. The group has developed a reputation as an outstanding performance ensemble that combines superior musicianship with a true sensitivity to the use of music as a vehicle to minister the gospel of Jesus Christ.

“The Lee Symphonic Band has always prided itself in being able to perform many different styles of music in their church performances,” said Bailey. “This will be demonstrated in the Tuesday evening concert. Because of this, many people see the sincerity of the performances of these students as they inspire many to seek a relationship with Christ as Savior.”

The 2014 Lee University Symphonic Band is made up of 54 outstanding musicians. Several of these students are former all-state and all-regional band participants in Tennessee, Ohio, Florida, Alabama and Georgia.

This concert is free, non-ticketed and open to the public.
