Summer Honors Reaches Record Enrollment

Featured, News, Summer Honors

Lee University’s 40th annual Summer Honors program celebrated a historic milestone this year, welcoming a record-breaking 231 incoming freshmen and high school seniors from across the nation for a transformative two-week experience. Held June 15–27, the interactive program is designed to introduce students to the spiritual, academic, and social opportunities of college life at Lee.

This year’s theme, “Peace,” was inspired by John 14:27: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Throughout the two-week event, students were reminded that true peace is found in Christ, even in the midst of uncertainty and change.

“Leading this 40th Summer Honors program has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my career,” said Dr. Jason Robinson, director of Summer Honors and professor of education at Lee. “To see 231 students come to campus, ready and excited to grow – spiritually, academically, and personally – reminds me why we do this. This program isn’t just about introducing students to college life; it’s about launching them into a future full of faith, leadership, and service. Watching these young people step up, build real friendships, and serve others with genuine hearts gives me so much hope for what God is doing at Lee and beyond.”

Participants chose two courses from a total of 14 offerings to earn six college credits. Examples included “Igniting the World for Change: Influence, Leadership, and the Power of Global Impact,” “Hype & Hashtags: Tracking Marketing Success in a Digital World,” “Called to Care: Discover Nursing,” “Music for Worship: The Role of Music and the Musician in Gathered Worship,” “Christian Leadership: What’s the Deal and Why Should You Care?” and “Peer into Life Unseen: A Hands-On Journey Through Science.” These and other courses, all taught by Lee University professors, offered students a preview of collegiate academics.

Beyond the classroom, students enjoyed a legendary lineup of events designed to keep them energized and fully immersed in campus life. From rafting down the Ocoee River to competing in the unforgettable Greek Olympics, the energy never let up. The 27 Peer Leaders, student and professional resident directors, and specialized operations, activities, and events teams helped plan and lead these events, demonstrating servant leadership and unwavering commitment throughout the program. Highlights included Karaoke Night, the brand-new “Bikers or Surfers” theme night, and the celebratory banquet – plus many more activities each day.

“These experiences fostered community, strengthened teamwork, and created memories to last a lifetime,” said Robinson.

A central aspect of the program was faith development, enriched through daily devotionals, small group discussions, and worship experiences. These moments gave students the opportunity to deepen their faith, share their journeys with peers, and experience a vital part of life at Lee University.

“Summer Honors changed my life forever. I found not only lifelong friends but a place where I truly belong,” said Maguire Robinson, an incoming freshman from Lebanon, Ohio. “From unforgettable activities to powerful worship nights, every moment was filled with a sense that God was moving deeply in my heart.”

This year, students united for a Serve Day at Operation Compassion, a humanitarian nonprofit organization dedicated to meeting the physical, emotional, and social needs of individuals worldwide. Students participated in organizing and preparing essential supplies for distribution, contributing to the organization’s efforts in disaster relief, clean water initiatives, food distribution, and life rehabilitation programs. This hands-on experience embodied the spirit of servant leadership, echoing Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 23:11: “the greatest among you will be your servant.”

“During Summer Honors, the Lord revealed to me that He is my peace – in surrender, in the valley, and in the waiting,” said Cloey Levstek, an incoming freshman from Acworth, Georgia. “I made friendships that will last a lifetime and learned from college professors who truly care. Every event showed me what it means to be part of the Lee University family.”

Building on last year’s success, Serve Teams returned this summer, bringing together key leaders from across the university, including faculty, athletics staff, financial aid experts, and professionals from Student Financial Services and Student Life & Success. Additionally, the university’s cabinet and academic deans personally served students at the closing dinner celebration. According to Robinson, this initiative provides participants with opportunities to connect with influential leaders from different campus sectors, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the university’s community and support systems.

“Summer Honors was truly one of the best experiences of my life,” said Rex Trent, an incoming freshman from Dripping Springs, Texas. “Being part of the Lee community encouraged and inspired me, filling me with excitement for my future at Lee. I met people who will be my closest friends for the next four years – friends who will challenge me in my faith and help me grow closer to God. It was fun, exciting, and a powerful reminder of all that God can do.”
