On Friday, Sept. 18, Lee University students attended Unum’s “Leading the Future Day,” a day focused on student leadership at Unum’s corporate headquarters in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The event brought together top students from universities across the Southeast. Students from Kappa Mu Epsilon, a national honor society for mathematics, and Lee Prime, Lee University’s official mathematics club, received a formal invitation to participate in the leadership conference. Kappa Mu Epsilon members Lauren Todd, mathematics major and president, and Sarah Minucci, mathematics major, went as representatives of the honor society. Blessing Okenye and Philip Winn, actuary majors, went as Lee’s actuary student representatives.

“Getting to be in a room full of hardworking students who are trying to become actuaries or simply business professionals was pretty neat,” said Winn.

The “Leading the Future Day” consisted of a networking lunch, office tour, Unum business overview, and a panel with the Unum senior leadership team.

According to Okenye and Todd, they both enjoyed learning so much about what the company does, and said it is an event they would definitely go to again. Lee Associate Professor of Mathematics Dr. Caroline Maher-Boulis, sponsor of Lee Prime and Kappa Mu Epsilon, encouraged the students to attend.

“This was a great opportunity for our actuary students to learn about one of the leading companies in the insurance industry,” said Maher-Boulis. “We hope to participate in similar events with other local industries and corporations and create new partnerships with them.”
