Events, Music, News

String Theory at the Hunter, in partnership with Lee University and the Hunter Museum of American Art, will host the second “No Strings Attached!” on Tuesday, March 9, at 6:30 p.m., a virtual event allowing audience members to experience behind-the-scenes conversations and impromptu performances with The Neubauer Quartet.

“We are thrilled to offer audience members a chance to connect with guest artists and our String Theory family,” said Dr. Gloria Chien, artistic director and pianist.

The Neubauer Quartet consists of siblings Oliver and Clara Neubauer, violin; their mother Kerry McDermott, violin; and their father Paul Neubauer, viola.

The Neubauer/McDermott Family Quartet has appeared at Parlance Chamber Concerts, Lake Champlain Music Festival, Art in Avila in Curaçao, Bravo! Vail, If Music Be the Food NYC, and Music from Angel Fire. Recently, they perf ormed virtual “living room concerts” for Jan Vogler’s Music Never Sleeps livestream and for Chamber Music Northwest’s virtual summer festival. They also opened Music@Menlo’s 2020 virtual summer festival “Intermezzo” with Clara’s arrangement of Elgar’s “Salut D’Amour.”

McDermott has appeared as a soloist with orchestras throughout the United States and abroad. In addition, she has been a prize winner in the Montreal International Competition and the International Tchaikovsky Competition, where she received a special award for Best Artistic Interpretation.

Paul Neubauer’s “exceptional musicality and effortless playing” led the New York Times to call him “a master musician.” He gave the U.S. Premiere of the newly discovered Impromptu for viola and piano by Shostakovich with pianist Wu Han. In addition, his recording of the Aaron Kernis Viola Concerto with the Royal Northern Sinfonia was released on Signum Records, and his recording of the complete viola and piano music by Ernest Bloch with pianist Margo Garrett was released on Delos.

“No Strings At tached!” is free and open to the public, though registration is required.

String Theory was founded in 2009 by Chien in order to expose new audiences to chamber music, invigorate the local classical music scene, and cultivate a future generation of music lovers.
