String Theory at the Hunter to Welcome Vieaux and McAllister
String Theory at the Hunter, in partnership with Lee University and the Hunter Museum of American Art, will present Grammy Award-winners Jason Vieaux, guitar, and Timothy McAllister, saxophone, in concert on Tuesday, Dec. 13, at 6:30 p.m.
“These innovative artists will premiere a String Theory co-commissioned piece by Pierre Jalbert, Sweet and Doleful Timbres, which promises to highlight not only their musical prowess but also the joy of their friendship,” says Dr. Gloria Chien, String Theory founder and artistic director. “This congenial concert will be the highlight of the holiday season!”
In addition to Sweet and Doleful Timbres, Vieaux and McAllister will perform Zohn’s Humoresque and Dance, Conte’s Soliloquy, Metheny’s Four Paths of Light, Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango, and Garrop’s Phoenix Rising.
Vieaux’s multiple appearances for San Francisco Performances, Caramoor Festival, Ravinia Festival, 92nd Street Y, and Domaine-Forget, among others, have helped to cement his reputation as one of the world’s leading guitarists. He has also performed as a soloist with over 100 orchestras, including Cleveland, Toronto, Houston, Nashville, and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s. The Huffington Post declared that his Grammy-winning 2014 solo album Play is “part of the revitalized interest in the classical guitar.”
Vieaux co-founded the guitar department at the Curtis Institute of Music in 2011 with David Starobin and has taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music for 25 years.
McAllister is a premier soloist and a member of the Grammy-winning PRISM Quartet with over 50 recordings and 200 premières to his credit of new compositions by eminent and emerging composers worldwide. He has appeared with more than 40 of the world’s most prominent orchestras and ensembles in over 20 countries.
A widely respected teacher of his instrument, McAllister is the professor of saxophone at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance, and he appears at summer festivals and academies worldwide. He also holds a Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Michigan.
Prior to the Tuesday performance, Musical Dialogues will take place at 6 p.m., where Chien will engage the artists in an informal interview about their interpretations of the music, their experiences as professional musicians performing all over the world, and other fun facts that makes the performance personal.
Tickets are on sale now through Dec. 13 and are $45 for general admission, $35 for Hunter members, and $10 for students and music teachers.
String Theory was founded in 2009 by Chien to expose new audiences to chamber music, invigorate the local classical music scene, and cultivate a future generation of music lovers.
