Music, News

String Theory at the Hunter, in collaboration with Lee University and the Hunter Museum of American Art, will host a concert featuring acclaimed baritone Will Liverman and pianist Gloria Chien on Tuesday, October 29, at 6:30 p.m.

“This concert is not just an event; it’s an experience that celebrates the beauty and diversity of chamber music,” said Chien, founder and artistic director of String Theory.

The performance will include pieces such as Florence Price’s “I Grew a Rose,” Damien Sneed’s “I Dream a World,” Maurice Ravel’s “Don Quichotte à Dulcinée, M. 84,” and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Songs of Travel.”

Will Liverman

Called “a voice for this historic moment” by the Washington Post, GRAMMY Award-winning Liverman is the recipient of the 2022 Beverly Sills Artist Award and co-creator of The Factotum, which premiered at the Lyric Opera Chicago in 2023.

Liverman’s 2024/2025 season includes engagements at The Metropolitan Opera (Papageno, The Magic Flute), Lyric Opera of Chicago and San Francisco Opera (Marcello, La Bohème), and Dutch National Opera, plus concerts at Carnegie Hall, San Francisco Symphony, Rhode Island Philharmonic, Oakland Symphony, New York Festival of Song, and the Oxford International Song Festival.

Cedille Records released Liverman’s Show Me the Way with pianist Jonathan King, a celebration of American song featuring guest performances by Renée Fleming, J’Nai Bridges, Nicole Cabell, Lady Jess, Tahirah Whittington, and Terry Liverman. His Dreams of a New Day: Songs by Black Composers debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Traditional Classical chart and was GRAMMY Award-nominated for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album.

Gloria Chien

Chien has one of the most diverse musical lives as a noted performer, concert presenter, and educator. She was selected by the Boston Globe as one of its superior pianists of the year, “… who appears to excel in everything.”

Chien made her orchestral debut at the age of 16 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) with Thomas Dausgaard and performed again with the BSO with Keith Lockhart. In recent seasons she has performed as a recitalist and chamber musician at Alice Tully Hall, the Library of Congress, the Phillips Collection, the Kissingen Sommer festival, the Dresden Chamber Music Festival, and the National Concert Hall in Taiwan. A former member of CMS Two, she performs frequently with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

Chien serves as the co-artistic director of Chamber Music Northwest in Portland, Oregon, as well as the Lake Champlain Chamber Music Festival in Burlington, Vermont, along with her husband, Soovin Kim. She earned her Doctor of Musical Arts from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and she is a Steinway Artist.

“Pregame with Bob” will take place at 5:45 p.m., in which Chattanooga Symphony & Opera Music Director Emeritus Bob Bernhardt will discuss the evening’s program, giving an in-depth look at the featured composers and works, including interviews with the artists.

String Theory was founded in 2009 by Chien to expose new audiences to chamber music, invigorate the local classical scene, and cultivate a future generation of music lovers.

Tickets for the Tuesday evening performance are available now through Oct. 29 and are $54 for non-members, $42 for Hunter members, and $10 for students and music teachers with ID.
