SOM to Welcome Yi-Yang Chen in Recital

Lee University will welcome pianist Dr. Yi-Yang Chen for a guest recital on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. in the Squires Recital Hall, located in the Humanities Center on Lee’s campus.

Chen, known for his “musical and emotional intelligence, dexterity, and virtuosity” (Worthing Herald), will perform works by Beethoven, Chopin, Paderewski, and Sergie Rachmaninoff at the concert. 

Chen has won several awards throughout his career, including back-to-back victories in the 2018 Sussex International Piano Competition, 2017 Washington International Competition, and the Waring International Piano Competition. 

He has performed on five continents in acclaimed venues such as Carnegie Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre, National Concert Hall in Taipei, and the Assembly Hall in Worthing, United Kingdom, with esteemed orchestras including Worthing Symphony Orchestra, Brevard Music Center Orchestra, Avanti Orchestra, Eastman Philharmonic Orchestra, National Chinese Orchestra, and the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra.

Chen currently serves as assistant professor of piano at the University of Kansas and the artist director and founder of the Appalachian Music Festival. He also has solo/chamber masterclasses with Emanuel Ax, Glenn Dicterow, Itzhak Perlman, Daniel Pollack, Thomas Sauer, and with members from the Cleveland, Shanghai, Borromeo, Brentano, Ying, and Guarneri string quartets.

He completed his Doctor of Musical Arts at the Eastman School of Music with pianist Douglas Humphreys and his master’s degree at The Juilliard School with renowned musicians Robert McDonald and Jerome Lowenthal. 

The recital is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public. It will also be available to watch via livestream at leeu.live.
