Lee University’s School of Music will present Dr. Caitlin Jones, instructor of percussion, performing “Thinking Songs” in a faculty recital on Monday, Sept. 29, at 7:30 p.m. The performance will take place in Squires Recital Hall, located in the Humanities Building on Lee’s campus.

“I was thrilled to be invited to perform ‘Thinking Songs,’ a masterwork for solo marimba, by Lukas Ligeti at two portrait festivals of Ligeti’s compositions this October in Austria and Hungary,” said Dr. Jones. “I look forward to performing the full piece at Lee University and sharing this wondrous work here before heading to Europe!”

Featuring five distinct movements, “Thinking Songs” is expansive in terms of length, content, and marimba technique, and displays compositional influences from both Western classical music and African music.

Dr. Jones is an American percussionist who has performed across the United States as a marimba soloist and as a member of the Harnsberger/Jones Duo. She is a proponent for the advancement of solo and duo marimba repertoire and focuses on bringing new music to a variety of audiences. In 2018, Jones was the marimba soloist for the American premiere of Roumen Boyadjieff Jr.’s “Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra” with the Cleveland Orchestra of Tennessee. Most recently, she performed this work with the Anderson Symphony Orchestra in 2025.

Dr. Jones was noted as an “Emerging Leader” by the Percussive Arts Society in 2016 and made her debut performance at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in 2019. She is currently endorsed by Malletech Instruments and Grover Pro Percussion. Jones teaches in the percussion area at both Lee University and Chattanooga State Community College. She received her Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of South Carolina, Master of Music from Lee University, and Bachelor of Music from the University of Florida.
