Advent Now!

Lee University’s musical ensemble Advent Now! will perform on Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in The Lee Chapel.

“We look forward to sharing the joy of Christmas on Lee’s campus and later, on our upcoming tour,” said Dr. Austin Patty, professor of music theory. “We will be traveling to Japan and performing concerts there in December, but it is a pleasure to be able to share this music with our community before we go.  I hope this concert whets your desire to celebrate Christmas!”

The performance will feature a wide variety of Christmas music, including traditional favorites such as “Winter Wonderland” and “The Christmas Song,” while showcasing new arrangements, such as a combination of “Sing We Now of Christmas” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” performed in Baroque style. The concert will conclude with Israel Houghton’s “Go Tell.”

The group comprises Patty, violin; Dr. Jesse McConnell, instructor of tuba and euphonium, tuba; and Lee students Arami Andersen Antunez, violin; Avery Brokish, drum set and vibraphone; Allison Lamm, saxophone; Crimson Parsons, clarinet; and Mansfield Yiu, piano. Lise Berryhill, Eleanor Christmann, Victor Davis, Jasmine Medlock, Kaden Pennertz, and Lillian Rogers serve as the group’s vocalists.

“This will be Advent Now!’s seventh Christmas trip to Japan,” said Patty. “Christmas is a great time to go, as people in Japan are interested in Christmas music and traditions, but typically know little about its significance. These concerts provide a way for them to hear about why Jesus came.”

In addition to music students and faculty, Dr. Arden Jensen, a professor of English at Lee whose specialty area includes Japanese language and culture, will accompany the group and provide a short, informative talk during the concerts’ intermissions.

This concert is free and open to the public, but donations are welcome. Donations may be made at the door and will go toward supporting the ensemble’s December trip.
