News

Dr. Ashley Smith, Jr. has been elected to serve as president-elect on the board of trustees of the Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE).

Smith, professor of education and director of Teacher Education and Field Services at Lee, has served as a South Region trustee for AMLE for the past six years. AMLE is a global non-profit association and leading provider of quality resources, programs, and services for those who work with young adolescents—youth aged 10 to 15. Founded in 1973, AMLE has more than 28,000 members in 45 countries, and 58 affiliate organizations worldwide.

“It is an honor to be selected by middle level educators across the country to serve as president-elect and in the following year as president of the Association for Middle Level Education,” Smith commented. “AMLE is the leading national organization dedicated to improving the educational experiences of young adolescents by providing vision, knowledge, and resources to educators who teach them. As president, I look forward to furthering the mission of AMLE.”

Members of the AMLE board of trustees serve a critical role in setting the strategic plan of the association and advocating for policies and practices that guarantee a quality education for all young adolescents.

“We are pleased to have Ashley continue his service on the AMLE Board as we engage in the important work of making a difference in the lives of students,” said AMLE Executive Director William Waidelich.

Smith joined Lee’s Helen DeVos College of Education in 2005. Prior to his arrival at Lee, Smith served as the supervisor of Middle Grades and Grants for the Cleveland City School System and as principal of Cleveland Middle School for 18 years.

He holds an EdD from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, an MS from Middle Tennessee State University, and a BS from the University of Florida.
