Lee University’s School of Music will host a guest recital featuring clarinetist Dr. Todd Waldecker, accompanied by Dr. Adam Clark on piano and Dr. Bryan Hayslett on cello. The performance will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 6 p.m. in Squires Recital Hall, located in the Humanities Center on Lee’s campus.

The recital will open with “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano” by Aaron Copland, then “Duo Sonata for Clarinet and Piano” by Peter Schickele, followed by “Three Pieces for Clarinet and Piano” by Paquito D’Rivera. The program will close with “Fantasy Trio, Op. 26” by Robert Muczynski.

“We are very excited to have Dr. Todd Waldecker on our campus,” said Dr. Amy Humberd, assistant professor of clarinet. “Having worked with him several times before, I am sure that his recital will be an unforgettable experience for all who attend. I am particularly excited that he is bringing Adam Clark and Bryan Hayslett to accompany him.”

Waldecker has served for over 25 years as professor of clarinet at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where he teaches applied clarinet, chamber music, and clarinet pedagogy, and directs the MTSU clarinet choir. He was a recipient of the MTSU Foundation Outstanding Teacher Award in 2006 and has served for over 20 years on the faculty of the Tennessee Governor’s School for the Arts. Waldecker has performed as a soloist and chamber musician across the United States, Europe, Asia, and South America at international conventions, on concert series, and in universities and high schools. He is a frequent performer with the Nashville Symphony and serves as principal clarinet of the Nashville Opera. He holds degrees from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Yale University, and the University of Missouri.

Clark is professor of piano at MTSU and maintains an active career as a teacher, adjudicator, and presenter. He has presented nationally and internationally on piano technique, pedagogical repertoire, Bach transcriptions, and the music of Rachmaninoff and Liszt, among others. Clark has performed as a soloist, chamber musician, and concerto soloist throughout the United States and internationally in Australia, Belgium, Italy, Latvia, Sweden, and South Korea. His performances include appearances with the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Holland Symphony Orchestra, and San Luis Obispo Symphony, as well as at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and the Sejong Arts Center. Clark holds degrees from the University of California, Santa Barbara; the University of Texas at Austin; and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Hayslett currently serves as assistant professor of cello and academic studies at MTSU and section cellist of the Palm Beach Opera. He has founded and performed with numerous contemporary music ensembles, including Juxtatonal and Semiosis Quartet. He has premiered works with Equilibrium Concert Series, The Fifth Floor Collective, and New Music Brandeis and collaborated with composers including Louis Andriessen, Joan Tower, Evan Ziporyn, Ted Hearne, and Yehudi Wyner. He holds degrees from New York University, The Boston Conservatory, and The Hartt School of Music.

The recital is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public. It will also be available to watch via livestream at leeu.live.
