School of Music to Present “Ning & Friends”
The Lee University School of Music will present “Ning & Friends” on Tuesday, April 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the Squires Recital Hall inside Lee’s Humanities Center. The concert will feature guest artists James Buswell, violin; Julie Albers, cello; and Ning An, piano.
Musical selections for the evening will include Chopin’s “24 Preludes, Op.28,” Gliere’s “8 Pieces for Violin and Cello, Op.39,” and Schubert’s “Piano Trio no. 1.”
Buswell has appeared with orchestras in the United States and Canada, as well as Europe, Asia, Australia and South America, and has collaborated with such distinguished conductors as Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, Zubin Mehta, Seiji Ozawa, André Previn and Michael Tilson Thomas. Active as a concerto soloist, chamber musician, recitalist, conductor and educator, Buswell is also an artist-member of both the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Bach Aria Group.
Buswell’s recordings of the Piston and Barber violin concerti were released on the Naxos label, for which the latter received a 2003 Grammy nomination. Buswell currently serves as a faculty member at the New England Conservatory of Music.
Albers made her orchestral debut with the Cleveland Orchestra in 1998 and has since performed throughout North America, Europe, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, and New Zealand. In 2003, she was named the first Gold Medal Laureate of South Korea’s Gyeongnam International Music Competition, winning the $25,000 grand prize. She also won Second Prize in Munich’s International Music Competition of the Ard and was awarded the Wilhelm Weichsler Music Prize of Osnabruch.
Albers is active with the Albers String Trio and the Cortona Trio. She currently serves as an assistant professor and holds the Mary Jean and Charles Yates Cello Chair at the McDuffie Center for Strings at Mercer University in Macon, Ga.
An, an assistant professor of music at Lee’s School of Music, is hailed by the New York Concert Review as a musician who “combines a flawless technique and mastery of the instrument with an expressive power that is fueled by profound and insightful understanding.”
An’s top prizes from the Queen Elizabeth, Cleveland, and William Kapell Piano competitions led to performances across the globe, from Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital and Milan’s Salle Verdi to Beijing’s Great Hall of the People. He has performed with some of the world’s great ensembles, including the Ysaÿe, Daedalus, and Takács quartets, as well as with renowned instrumentalists Paul Neubauer, Andres Diaz, and Soovin Kim.
The recital is free and open to the public, but tickets are required due to limited seating.
Tickets will be available at the Dixon Center box office Monday through Friday from 3-6 p.m. and at the door one hour prior to the 7:30 p.m. performance.
