School of Music to Present Masterworks Concert

Events, Music, News

Lee University’s School of Music will present its annual Masterworks Concert on Friday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. in the Conn Center. The concert, featuring the Lee University Symphony Orchestra, Chorale, and Choral Union, is dedicated to those suffering in Ukraine.

Lee Symphony Orchestra will showcase works by Saint-Saens Debussy and Elgar. All ensembles will together perform Gabriel Fauré’s “Requiem” featuring faculty soloists, Dr. Lenena Brezna and Dr. Nathaniel Olson. The groups will also perform “Ukrainian Alleluia” by Craig Courtney.

According to Dr. Cameron Weatherford, assistant professor of choral music and director of Choral Union, the Fauré “Requiem” has been performed countless times by ensembles all over the world since its inception in 1887.

“Though the notes and rhythms stay the same, the sentiment of this masterpiece can find a way to transform with every performance,” said Weatherford. “In this case, the Lee performers are remembering those in the Ukraine and dedicating this performance to them. This work serves as a call for peace and tranquility, and we want to stand in solidarity with those who are unwillingly thrown into the trials of war.”

The Lee University Symphony Orchestra, directed by School of Music faculty Sarah Pearson, is an ensemble of select instrumentalists who perform a wide variety of orchestral literature.

Choral Union consists of a unique blend of Lee University music majors and non-music majors and performs choral music and major masterworks for mixed chorus and orchestra.

The Lee University Chorale, directed by School of Music Dean Dr. William Green, is an ensemble of highly motivated vocalists who are selected by audition. An emphasis is placed on the diversity and breadth of traditional choral literature.

“On behalf of all the performers, we count it a privilege to bring this music to life, as so many others have,” said Weatherford.

Masterworks is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public. Livestream viewing will be available at leeu.live.
