On Saturday, Jan. 28, Lee University’s School of Music will host Clarinet Day, a showcase of clarinet music featuring local high school performers who will present a concert at 5:30 p.m., followed by a 6 p.m. performance by the Civitasolis Reed Quintet.

Clarinet Day, hosted by Lee music professor Dr. Amy Humberd, consists of workshops, exhibits, and a masterclass for local high school students, grades 9-12.

“This will be an exciting and fun day for many high school students in our area,” said Humberd. “For the majority of these students, it will be their first time attending an event like this, catered explicitly to their instrument. We are thrilled to host events like these to nurture aspiring young musicians and share their music with the community.”

 The Clarinet Choir Concert will begin at 5:30 p.m., featuring a student showcase of clarinet pieces.

The Civitasolis Reed Quintet will perform at 6 p.m. and will welcome Robert Alexander, bassoon; Beth King-Bennet, saxophone; Humberd, clarinet; Ryan Periera, bass clarinet; and Luis Gallo Quintero, oboe. The quintet will perform pieces such as Biedenbender’s “Refraction” and Deemer’s “Gallimaufry,” among others.

A masterclass, featuring works by Brahms and Weber, will also take place at 2:30 p.m. that day for the Clarinet Day participants.

The masterclass and concerts will take place in Squires Recital Hall in Lee University’s Humanities Building, located on Paul Conn Parkway. All performances are free, non-ticketed, and open to the public.
