Alumni, News

Gloria Scott-Richmond was recently named the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus for Lee University’s School of Music. The award was presented by Dr. William Green, dean of the School of Music, at a department breakfast during Lee’s Homecoming.

“Gloria’s work over the years represents the best of the Lee University education, as it combines care for others and strong musical training,” said Green. “We are proud that Gloria has been recognized as an outstanding professional in her field by the state of Tennessee, and we are honored to have her as our distinguished alumna for 2014.”

Scott-Richmond received both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in music education from Lee University and has been teaching music at Blythe-Bower Elementary School in Cleveland for 26 years. She is also a part-time faculty member in the Lee University School of Music, serving as director of the Evangelistic Singers.

In 2002, Scott-Richmond was among the top three nominees for the Tennessee Teacher of the Year. The Tennessee General Assembly honored and commended her in a resolution, part of which stated, “We hereby honor and commend Ms. Gloria Scott-Richmond for her meritorious service to the State of Tennessee, and extend to her our best wishes for every future success.”

Scott-Richmond’s teaching of general music to elementary students includes vocal and instrumental music, as well as music appreciation, exploration, history, and basic analysis. Her teaching day goes well beyond the school day, with practice sessions before school and the strings programs after school.

The Cleveland Daily Banner profiled Scott-Richmond in an article in 2010 titled “Scott-Richmond, a Music Teacher of Passion.” The Lee Clarion also featured her in an article titled “Evangelistic Singers grows, thanks to Gloria Scott-Richmond.”
