Rymer Scholarship Winners Announced

News

Chanda Hughes, Katrina Hughes, and David Queen were named Gold winners for Lee University’s 2014 Rymer Scholarship awards. Three Gold Scholars, three Silver Scholars, and three Bronze Scholars were presented awards at the annual Rymer Scholars banquet at Lee on Tuesday, April 29.

The scholarships are awarded annually by the Rymer Foundation, established by Hoyle Rymer and his father, the late Robert Rymer, honoring exceptional achievement and encouraging students to continue their education in Cleveland. Since the scholarship’s inception in 1990, almost 200 Clevelanders have earned the title “Rymer Scholar.”

Nine finalists were chosen from the group of applicants for the 2014 awards. Principals from Bradley Central High School (BCHS), Cleveland High School (CHS), and Walker Valley High School (WVHS) nominated faculty representatives to serve on the selection committee alongside Lee University representatives.

The selection committee reviewed the applications and conducted interviews with each finalist. The winners were selected based on their leadership in extracurricular, athletic and church-based activities, high school rank and grade point average, college-board exam scores, and the interview.

As Rymer Gold Scholarship winners, Chanda Hughes (WVHS), daughter of Maurice and Tonya Hughes; Katrina Hughes (BCHS), daughter of Kenneth and Peggy Hughes; and David Queen (CHS), son of Dennis and Angie Queen, will each receive a scholarship of $10,000.

This year’s Rymer Silver Scholarship winners are Mikaela Clements (WVHS), daughter of Greg and Monica Clements; Bailey Cortney (WVHS), daughter of Chris Cortney and Amanda Elliot; and Hannah Holland (CHS), daughter of Sean and Erin Holland. They will each receive a scholarship of $5,000.

The Bronze Scholars will receive a scholarship of $2,000. These winners are Christian Albritton (BCHS), son of Christian and Tricia Albritton; Taylor Sutton (WVHS), daughter of Brian and Renee Sutton; and Alexis Wright (WVHS), daughter of Zachary and Kristy Wright.

All monetary awards will be dispersed to the winners over a period of four years.
