Recital to Showcase Works by Women Composers

Lee University School of Music will present a guest recital featuring pianist Jeong Yun Yang in recognition of International Women’s Week (IWW) on Thursday, March 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Squires Recital Hall.
This recital will highlight repertoire by women composers from the late 19th century through the 21st century, including “Ballad, Op. 6” by Amy Beach, “Femmes de légende” by Mel Bonis, “Fingerdance” by Jean Ahn, “Diabellical Waltz” by Lera Auerbach, “Sonata for Piano No. 2: Il Segno” by Lera Auerbach, and “Troubled Water” by Margaret Bonds.
“We are proud to present this recital in celebration of International Women’s Week,” said Dr. Vanessa Wei, assistant professor of piano. “By presenting repertoire from Amy Beach to contemporary composers such as Jean Ahn and Lera Auerbach, this program reflects ongoing scholarly and artistic work to recognize the historical and contemporary contributions of women composers. The concert highlights the evolving presence of women’s voices in the piano canon and encourages continued dialogue around representation, creativity, and musical innovation.”
Yang is a piano instructor at the Winchester Community Music School in Massachusetts, an educational partner of Steinway & Sons, and an active member of the New England Piano Teachers’ Association. She also serves as assistant director of the Ian Hobson International Piano Festival.
As a soloist, Yang has performed in major venues across the United States, France, Puerto Rico, and South Korea. She has also earned top honors at international competitions including the American Protégé Music Competition, Charleston International Music Competition, Royal Sound Music Competition in Montreal, and the Ars Nova Competition in South Korea.
Yang holds a Doctor of Music from Florida State University, along with a Master of Music from both the University of Michigan and Ewha Womans University. She also holds a Bachelor of Music from Ewha Womans University.
This recital is a part of Lee University’s IWW celebrations. The purpose of IWW is to inspire and empower women by highlighting their achievements, addressing their challenges, and fostering a supportive and well-informed community. In addition to this recital, Lee will host special chapel services, panels, student poster sessions, and various events across campus.
This event will be free, non-ticketed, and open to the public. Livestream viewing is available at leeu.live.
