Lee Graduate Receives Alpha Chi Fellowship

Lee University graduate Matt Ray recently received the H.Y. Benedict Fellowship from the Alpha Chi National Honor Society. Ray was one of 10 graduating seniors nationwide awarded the fellowship.

Ray graduated summa cum laude from Lee on May 4 with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology and a minor in writing.

While at Lee, Ray was president of the sociology club, and a member of Alpha Chi National Honor Society and Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honors Society. He was named a Crosby Scholar, took first place in the Alpha Chi academic showcase, and is listed in Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. Ray also earned the Scholarship and Performance Award from Lee’s Sociology Department.

“Matt brings to sociology a strong faith and an interest in social policy,” said Dr. Karen Mundy Judkins, professor of Sociology at Lee. “He represents a new generation of sociologists who are unashamedly Christian and unashamedly empirical, and find truth in both.”

Ray received the Outstanding Scholars Program Graduate Fellowship from the University of Connecticut, where he will attend in the fall to pursue his doctorate in sociology.

Together with his wife, Bridgett, Ray has two children, Christian and Haylie.

Alpha Chi is a coeducational academic honor society. Since 1922 its purpose has been to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction. Alpha Chi inducts only the top 10 percent of students from all disciplines in the junior and senior classes and graduate programs and has a presence in almost every state.
