The Lee University School of Music will present soprano Dr. Deborah Popham in recital on Monday, Oct. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in Squires Recital Hall.

The performance will include “Venezia: chansons en dialecte vénitien” by Reynaldo Hahn, “So Free Am, I” by Ben Moore, and works by Francis Poulenc and Sergei Rachmaninov.

Popham serves as the associate professor of music, the coordinator of vocal studies, and the director of opera theatre at Shorter University. She has performed internationally as a soloist throughout Canada, Italy, and Switzerland, and is a founding member of the ensemble Trio Roma.

Selected for the Emerging Artist program with OperaWorks, Popham has performed with Arizona Opera and Rome Symphony. Some of her roles include Madame Lidoine in “Dialogues of the Carmelites,” Michaëla in “Carmen,” Vitellia in “La Clemenza di Tito,” Cathleen in “Riders to the Sea,” and Tatania Navigator in “Royal Flush,” an original improvisational opera.

In 2014, Popham was selected as one of 12 teachers to participate in the prestigious National Association of Teachers of Singing Intern Program and was the recipient of the Emerging Leader Award for the Southeast Region.

Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Popham earned a doctorate of musical arts in vocal performance from Arizona State University (ASU), where she was a student of Dr. Jerry Doan. She received her master of music in music theater performance from ASU and earned her bachelor’s degree in vocal performance, along with two bachelor of arts degrees in English and philosophy, from the University of Akron.

The recital is a free, non-ticketed event and is open to the public. Squires Recital Hall is located in Lee’s Humanities Center on Parker Street.
