Opera Theatre to Present “The (little) Magic Flute”

Music, News

Lee University’s Opera Theatre will present a one-act version of Mozart’s “The little Magic Flute,” directed by James Frost, on Feb. 23-25 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. All performances will take place in the Dixon Center.

The little Magic Flute“The little Magic Flute” follows the story of Prince Tamino, who finds himself in a strange land on his quest to rescue Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night. He is accompanied by Papageno the bird-catcher and is given a magical flute to protect himself against the perils that he encounters.

The show is an expanded version of a one-act adaptation by Tyler Steele, a Lee University graduate. Steele’s adaptation, featuring a cast of six, performs in educational settings in Germany.

“When I saw Der Kleine Zauberflöte (The little Magic Flute) in Germany this past summer, I thought this would be perfect for my students and immediately started translating the text,” said Frost. “Since we have more than six students in the Opera Theatre, I decided to expand it, so that everyone would have something to play in the opera and this is the culmination of that process.”

The cast consists mostly of music majors, both undergraduate and graduate, students outside the music major, and faculty members specializing in voice. The production will feature 14 students divided into two casts, with one cast performing on Feb. 23 and Feb. 25, and the other cast singing on Feb. 24 and Feb. 26. The show will also feature a small instrumental ensemble that includes piano, flute, violin, and cello.

Tickets to “The little Magic Flute” are $8 for adults, $5 for seniors (60+), free for children, and can be purchased at leeu-music.eventbrite.com/ beginning Feb. 9. Tickets will also be available beginning Feb. 16 at the Dixon Center Box Office, open weekdays from 3-6 p.m. or by calling (423) 614-8343.
