Lee University Opera Theatre, directed by James Frost, will present Opera Scenes in the Squires Recital Hall on Sunday, April 21, at 3 p.m. 

The performance, which is the final project of Lee’s Opera Theatre class, will include various scenes from Mozart’s “Così fan tutte,” Massenet’s “Werther,” Mechem’s “Tartuffe,” Bernstein’s “Candide,” Bizet’s “Carmen,” Floyd’s “Susannah,” and Menotti’s “Medium.” 

Each participant of Opera Theatre will sing at least one solo role in one of the scenes. 

“The participants of each scene are challenged to stage their own scene with help from myself and the other participants, which is a great learning tool, using their own creative impulses,” said Frost, associate professor of music at Lee. 

Opera Theatre was started in the spring of 1998 by the now retired professor Tony Deaton as a workshop and has grown into a production organization performing a Musical Revue in the fall semester, a fully-staged opera from both standard and less traditional repertoire in February, and an Opera Scenes program during the spring semester.  

Frost joined the full-time School of Music faculty in 2007, where he teaches applied voice in addition to directing Lee’s Opera Theatre. Prior to his arrival at Lee, Frost lived in Germany for 20 years where he gained professional experience at various opera houses such as Stadttheatre Hildesheim in Germany, Tiroler Landestheater in Austria, and regional theatres in the United States. 

The performance is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public. A livestream will be available on leeu.live.
