Lee University’s Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics recently held a camp that sought to “Bring Life to Math” (BLT Math) for local students. From June 22-26, six middle schoolers from the Bradley County area gathered at the Science and Math Complex to learn about math’s real life applications.

The camp was an initiative of the BLT Math program, which aims to help break down barriers between students and the subject of math, allowing students to think for themselves while developing their critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. This year’s camp program included hands-on experiences, creative explorations, and intriguing puzzles and problems involving coding, algebra, geometry and proportions.

During the week, campers worked alongside Lee faculty, the Business office, and the Physical Plant team to see how math applies to real life in diverse situations.

“The camp has been very successful,” said Dr. Caroline Maher-Boulis, camp director and associate professor of mathematics at Lee. “At first students were intimidated by the idea of spending a whole week doing math, but after the first day, they realized it was a lot of fun and were very engaged with the activities.”
