Dr. Laura Singletary

Lee University’s Dr. Laura Singletary will continue the Cleveland Bradley County Public Library’s “Sassy Science Series” with a talk titled “Moments of Mathematical Beauty: A Brief Introduction to the History of Mathematics.” The program will take place Tuesday, Nov. 18, at noon and will include a 40-minute presentation followed by a 20-minute Q&A session.

“This talk will explore some of the surprising moments of beauty in the history of mathematics,” said Singletary, professor of mathematics. “These moments are flashes of insight that, much like some of life’s most breathtaking experiences, catch us off guard and invite us to see the world a little differently.”

In this informative talk, Singletary will share stories of problems that did not seem mathematical at first glance and uncover how creative mathematicians, such as Archimedes and Euler, used mathematics to illuminate truths about the world. She aims to reveal how the study of mathematics offers wonder, creativity, and a powerful lens for interpreting the world around us.

Singletary joined Lee’s faculty in 2012. She earned her Doctor of Philosophy in mathematics education from the University of Georgia where she was awarded the Presidential Graduate Fellowship. At Lee, she teaches mathematics and pedagogy courses for prospective teachers. Singletary has co-directed grant projects for the Mathematical Association of America and the Tennessee Department of Education. She has also mentored undergraduate researchers whose work has been published and presented at national conferences.

Most recently, Singletary received the 2025 Outstanding Publication Award for Linking Research to Practice from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics for her article “Reasoning on Display: Supporting Students’ Argumentation.”

“Programs like the Sassy Science Series remind us that science isn’t just for classrooms or labs; it’s for everyone,” said Kathy Davini, adult programming coordinator at the Cleveland Bradley County Public Library. “We love giving our community the chance to discover the excitement of science through engaging and inspiring speakers like Dr. Singletary.”

The series will conclude with Dr. Jonathan Cornett, professor of biology, presenting “Turning the Tables: Using Phages to Outsmart Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria” on December 16.

All installments of the series are free and open to the public. Each session will take place in the Flex Room of the Cleveland Bradley County Public Library, located at the corner of Church Street and 8th Street.
