Marimba Madness to Take Place Sunday

Lee University will host “Marimba Madness,” a percussion studio concert featuring guest artist Kevin Bobo on Sunday, March 27, at 3 p.m. in Squires Recital Hall. The concert will also feature students from the percussion studios of Dr. Andy Harnsberger, assistant professor of music and percussion coordinator at Lee, and Dr. Caitlin Jones, part-time faculty in the School of Music.

Bobo currently serves as professor of music (percussion) at the Indiana University (IU) Jacobs School of Music, a position he has held since 2007. Prior to his appointment at IU, he served as assistant professor of percussion at the University of Kansas. He studied percussion with J.C. Combs and Gordon Stout and composition with Greg Woodward and Dana Wilson.

Internationally respected as a solo marimba artist, Bobo has performed on five continents. His travels have taken him to Argentina, Australia, the Czech Republic, France, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Singapore, Taiwan, and much of the United States.

As a composer, Bobo’s compositions are performed all over the world with his solo works frequently appearing on international competition repertoire lists. He has authored two method books and composed numerous pieces for a variety of instruments and ensembles.

Bobo currently lives in Bloomington, Indiana, with his wife Emily and their children, Penelope and Eli.

Student performers include Avery Brokish, Madeline Fowler, Ellis Byrd, Easton Christopher, Aaron Forde, Noah Backus, and Tyler Whitehead.

In addition to teaching and directing the percussion ensemble at Lee, Harnsberger is active throughout the year as a freelance percussionist and recitalist. He is a performing artist and clinician for Malletech Instruments and Mallets, Remo Drum Heads, Sabian Cymbals, Ltd., and Grover Pro Percussion.

“Marimba Madness” is free, non-ticketed, and open to the public.
