LeeU Theatre Announces Season Lineup
Lee University Theatre, led by Dr. Christine Williams, will produce four plays during the 2023-2024 season, including one student-directed production.
“Our 2023-2024 season offers a little of everything: bittersweet family drama, beloved classics, singing, Shakespearean tragedy, and more,” said Williams, chair of the Communication Arts Department and professor of theatre. “We are excited to share another great season of theatre with our community.”
The season will begin with the production of “Beware the Licorice Vines,” by Eddie Zipperer. The show tells the story of artist Hudson Manning as he struggles to overcome the death of his wife in the face of newfound love. Senior theatre major Miriam Viars will direct the play, which will run Sept. 29-30 and Oct. 5-7 at 7:30 p.m.
The season will continue with the production of “It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play,” by Joe Laundry and directed by Anna Marie Brendel, visiting lecturer of theatre and a Lee alumna. The play, set as a 1940’s radio broadcast, tells the classic story of George Bailey as he contemplates ending his life on Christmas Eve. The show will take place Nov. 3-4 and 9-11 at 7:30 p.m.
LeeU Theatre will continue into the spring with Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar,” on Feb. 9-17. The season will conclude in April with “The Sound of Music,” by Oscar Hammerstein II, Howard Lindsay, Russel Crouse, Richard Rodgers, and Maria Augusta Trapp.
“Beware the Licorice Vines,” “It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play,” and “Julius Caesar” will perform in the Buzz Oates Blackbox Theatre, located in the Communication Arts Building, and “The Sound of Music” will take place in Lee’s Dixon Center.
Online ticket sales are available within a week of opening night on Eventbrite or through the Lee Theatre Box Office, also located in the Communication Arts Building.
