Lee’s CRC to Host Guest Lecture on the Citizen as a Wayfarer
On Friday, Oct. 8, Lee University’s Center for Responsible Citizenship (CRC) will welcome Dr. Brian Smith to speak on “Making Peace with the Wayfaring Life,” a discussion on how Christians may navigate the challenges of the modern world through a renewed emphasis on persons and place.
This will be Smith’s second visit to Lee’s campus, and the CRC is excited to facilitate his return. In 2018, Smith met with Lee’s Politeia Society, an undergraduate philosophy reading group, regarding the political thought of novelist Walker Percy.
“Dr. Smith is an engaging speaker and a thoughtful Christian,” says Dr. Thomas Pope, director of the CRC. “He conveys a joyful passion for framing modern life in a manner that speaks to some of our deepest anxieties, reminding us that part of this disquiet comes from the fact that we are not fully meant for this world. I very much look forward to hearing from him again.”
Smith is the managing editor of Law & Liberty, a division of the Liberty Fund publishing company. He is the author of “Walker Percy and the Politics of the Wayfarer,” which highlights Percy’s unique perspective on the restlessness of contemporary society. He notes that many of our institutions that promise happiness fall short, leaving us more unsatisfied with ourselves and others than ever.
This event, open to Lee students, faculty, and the broader Cleveland community, will take place in Lee’s School of Nursing Lecture Hall at 5:30 p.m.
All attendees will be required to wear a mask during the lecture.
