Lee to Host Skride Sisters for Concert Series

News

Lee University will continue its
21st Presidential Concert Series with a performance
by the brilliant, young Latvian sister duo, violinist Baiba Skride
and pianist Lauma Skride. The concert will be at 7:30 p.m. on
Monday, Oct. 29 in the Squires Recital Hall on Lee’s campus.

Baiba Skride was born into a musical family in Riga where she
began her studies, and later continued her musical pursuits at the
Conservatory of Music and Theatre in Rostock.  In 2001, Skride
won First Prize in the Queen Elisabeth Competition.

She has appeared with prestigious orchestras such as the
Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunk, Orchestre de Paris,
Leipzig, and the US orchestras of Philadelphia, Houston and
Cincinnati. Recent highlights include Baiba’s much anticipated
debut with the Berlin Philharmonic playing “Berg: To the memory of
an Angel” with Andris Nelsons.

“Baiba Skride might be viewed as a throwback to the golden age
of Heifetz, Kreisler and Milstein…she has a way of speaking
naturally through her violin which instantly engages the listener’s
emotions,” according to BBC Music Magazine.

Pianist Lauma Skride, the youngest of three daughters, began
playing piano at the age of five, and has since travelled
extensively, performing either as a soloist or chamber
musician.

Lauma has appeared with numerous international symphonies, and
among her many accolades is the impressive Beethoven Ring, awarded
to her in 2008. She is recognized for her interpretations of
Germanic classical and Romantic works, and a broad repertoire that
includes works by Haydn, Schumann, Prokofiev, Mozart, and rarities
by Clara Schumann and Fanny Mendelssohn.

The Bavarian Broadcasting Service describes her playing as,
“Wonderfully sensitive, with marvelous tone quality, and highly
virtuosic vigour.”

Passionate energy, youthful vivacity, and musical sensitivity
have become the trademarks of the Skride duo. They appear regularly
as a duo in chamber music recitals and with orchestras in Europe
and the United States.

Tickets will be available at the Dixon Center Box Office
(423-614-8343) Oct. 22-26, from 3-6 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults
and $5 for senior adults and students.
