Lee to Host K-12 Summer Art Camps

Art, Community, News

As part of Lee University’s summer camp offerings, Lee’s art program is hosting four summer camp options for K-12 students. Camps will take place July 6-10 or July 13-17, with morning sessions from 9 a.m.-noon and afternoon sessions from 1-4 p.m.

“My hope is that students leave art camp excited about what they can create and be more confident in their artistic abilities,” said Mary Mathias-Dickerson, associate professor of art at Lee. “I want them to experience the joy of making art, trying new things, and being part of a creative community.”

During art camps, participants will explore art-making techniques and create projects led by art teachers and faculty. The cost is $120 per session per camper.

Art Beginners Camp with Taylor Baker for rising K-2nd graders is an active artistic learning experience. Students will learn about artists and nature with hands-on time crafting, painting, drawing, and modeling clay.

Art Explorers Camp, taught by Mary Ann Poplin, is for rising 2nd-5th graders. Structured like an art school class, students will enjoy learning about artists and cultures, painting, drawing, and other mediums, while practicing art skills throughout the week.

Parents of rising 2nd graders can choose between the K-2nd camp, which will feature more active play activities, or the 2nd-5th camp, which will incorporate writing activities into the curriculum.

The Art Insights Camp is for rising 6th–8th graders and is designed for students to learn about artists while receiving specialized art instruction. Students will enjoy painting, drawing, 3D projects, and practicing a wide variety of art skills. The camp will be led by Katie Beeh.

For rising 9th-12th graders, Revamp Art Camp will take place the week of July 13-17 and will be taught by Shanna Calfee. The week will provide an immersive experience in students’ choice of clay/ceramics, offered during the morning sessions, or drawing and painting, offered during the afternoon sessions.

High school students may choose to attend the morning session, the afternoon session, or both. Those who register for the full-day camp experience will enjoy a complimentary lunch.
