Lee University student Nate Powers, a junior telecommunications major, recently won the “Best Short Film” award in the amateur category of the G-Technology Driven Creativity film competition.

Powers released his film, entitled “Regret,” in late 2011. It is a story loosely based on Isaiah 6 dealing with the importance of accepting one’s past. The film was submitted to the Broad Street film festival in Chattanooga where it was nominated for six awards.

“This is a great example of excellent directing, cutting, good acting, a solid story with heart, eclipse lighting, shallow depth of field visuals, “perfect” camerawork, and Hollywood pizazz,” said Vincent Laforet, Pulitzer Prize winner and member of the Director’s Guild of America. “I think this filmmaker has quite a bright future.”

Having won the amateur contest, “Regret” is now a contender in the larger competition to win the cash prize of $5,000. “Regret” has garnered a three-day engagement in New York as part of the festival.

Lecturer in Telecommunications Mary Dukes said of Powers, “When Nate came to Lee, he was already blessed with a tremendous gift for creating inspirational media.  This award is just another way of recognizing that special moment when talent and hard work come together.”
