Lee Receives Grant from Bachman for Academic Support

Academics, Grants, News

Lee University was recently awarded a $4,500 grant from the Bachman Foundation, an organization for students with learning differences. This grant was awarded to Lee’s Academic Support Office, which helps students with disabilities have equal access to educational opportunities.

The grant will go toward the purchase of audiobook software from the non-profit educational organization Learning Ally. The software will allow students with dyslexia and reading difficulties access to audiobooks. Approximately 50 qualifying students will receive up to five years of the software through the Academic Support Office.

“This grant provides an opportunity for students who may have never had the chance before to have access to audiobooks, said Dr. La-Juan Bradford, director of academic support at Lee. “This will hopefully give them an even better chance to accomplish their academic goals and future professions.”

Learning Ally’s program has over 80,000 audiobooks, from textbooks and test prep to popular fiction and classic literature, for students from pre-K through college and adult learners. Their goal is to provide resources to the more than 30 million students who struggle to read.

The Bachman Foundation awards individual scholarships to students with learning differences and grants to educational programs that provide services for students with learning differences in East Tennessee. Since its founding, the Bachman Foundation has granted over $340,000 to local special education students, schools, and foundations.

Lee’s Academic Support Office provides services for students with learning difficulties and physical, sensory, learning, and/or emotional disabilities, both temporary and permanent. They also provide information about accessibility and accommodations.
