Lee University’s Department of Language and Literature recently hosted its 13th Annual Latin American/Caribbean, and Iberian Studies Conference, bringing together students and educators from multiple institutions to share research, attend presentations, and participate in student-led displays.

The event focused on the language, literature, and culture of Latin America, Spain, and the Caribbean, while also encouraging dialogue on service learning, cross-cultural experiences, foreign language methodology, and teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).

Panel presentations were given by faculty and students from Lee, University of Kentucky, Samford University, Kansas State University, and Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas in Mexico.

“The research and topics addressed allowed for interaction in both Spanish and English, as well as an engaging cultural exchange,” said Dr. Vivian Mazariegos of Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas. “It was an international experience of great academic value.”

In addition to university participants, the conference welcomed 10 Spanish-language students from Ooltewah High School. Accompanied by their teacher and Lee alum Evan Pell, the students attended the full conference and took part in the poster session organized by Dr. Carmen Guerrero, associate professor of Spanish at Lee.

Topics across the four panels included natural resources, family structure, manufacturing, salsa dance, and culturally appropriate care for Latino patients.

“This event was such a meaningful experience for me as a graduate student at the University of Kentucky,” said Lee alumna Kretel Arzola. “I’m truly grateful for the opportunity to present my research and connect with fellow students and faculty. These conversations reminded me why I love this work.”

Shirley Santamaría Casado, keynote speaker for the event, presented “Communication: A Transforming Adventure in a Changing Society,” focusing on the role of communication in shaping perspectives and influencing change.

“A well-communicated idea can change opinions, break stereotypes, inspire action, and open opportunities,” said Casado.

Casado is a Colombian public official with the Contraloría General de la República, where she has served in senior advisory and administrative roles. She has worked as a delegate of the comptroller general and held positions as an advisor and private secretary, contributing to oversight and institutional management.
