On Sept. 17, Lee University hosted the Constitution Bowl, bringing to its campus local high schools to compete in a quiz over the Constitution and other important Founding documents. The quiz bowl was sponsored by Lee’s chapter of the Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science Honors Society, and coordinated by Political Science professors Dr. Ana Alves, Dr. Thomas Pope, and Dr. Steve Swindle.

This year’s Bowl included participation of 69 high school students, representing eight different high schools: Lookout Valley, Tennessee Christian Academy, Walker Valley, Bradley Central, Brainerd, Baylor, Candies Creek, and Bradley County Home Educators, along with visiting homeschoolers from Georgia. One of the teams from Walker Valley won the trophy.

Each of the eighteen teams represented responded to questions on the Constitution, Declaration, constitutional history, selected federalist papers, and selected court cases. In each round, teams answered different types of questions: toss ups, team collaboration, head to head, and speed rounds.

“We were thrilled about this year’s event” said Alves. “The Constitution Bowl is a fun and informative way of celebrating the Constitution and American history.”

The bowl was hosted during Constitution Week, commemorating the constitution, which was originally adopted by the American Congress of the Confederation on Sept. 17, 1787.
