LEAP Scholars Serve at Night to Shine

Learn Engage Achieve Program, News

In partnership with Broad Street United Methodist Church and the Tim Tebow Foundation, Lee University’s LEAP (Learning Engage Achieve Program) students and staff recently helped host “Night to Shine,” a special prom night experience, centered on God’s love, for those ages 14 and older with special needs.

LEAP has faithfully served the Tim Tebow Foundation’s “Night to Shine” since 2018. The organizers plan for the event all year and provide training for LEAP students, who serve both before and during the Friday evening festivities.

“Night to Shine was such a joyful and meaningful experience,” said Sarah Smith, a sophomore psychology and sociology double major and LEAP student. “Being able to celebrate each guest and see how valued and loved they felt reminded me how powerful intentional kindness and community can be. It was a night full of laughter, dignity, and genuine connection.”

There were 22 LEAP volunteers who helped set up for the event. The students set up the church’s dining hall, dance floor, photo booth, hair and makeup room, and general decorations prior to the evening dance. Many served as event “buddies” as well and escorted guests down the red carpet, danced and ate with them, and served as their activity partner. Broad Street church members Jami and Jennifer Standridge served as the event coordinators, working alongside LEAP staff Dr. Angela Waltrip, director; Jocelyn VanSandt, coach and program assistant; Kathi Douglas, community coordinator; and Joshua Alexander, academic coordinator.

LEAP Scholar Kate Miller serves as a “buddy” for “Night to Shine.”

“LEAP students are thrilled to participate in Night to Shine, and many eagerly commit to serving at this special event year after year,” said Waltrip. “Since partnering with Broad Street United Methodist Church in 2018, LEAP has proudly supported this unforgettable prom experience for honored guests. Students dedicate themselves fully—setting up, preparing, and ensuring every detail is just right. They are especially excited to be paired with a buddy on the night of the prom, celebrating a joyful, memorable evening together.”

LEAP started in 2015 and is a federally funded TRIO Student Support Services Program. Ideal candidates for the program are first-generation, income-eligible, and students with disabilities. As part of this federal grant, students are encouraged to engage with the community to learn about career readiness.

The program currently provides individual success coaching, peer mentors, direct student aid, financial aid counseling, financial literacy education, cultural and academic enrichment opportunities, and other personalized services according to individual students’ needs.
