Lee University’s Dr. Glenna Lashley recently presented research at the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) National Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Lashley’s research studied the current state of Nurse Practitioner Preceptors, specifically the barriers and advantages to precepting. Preceptors are experienced licensed clinicians who act as teachers and coaches who supervise nursing students during their clinical rotations. Lashley and her colleagues presented preceptor models and feedback models to strengthen the relationships between the preceptor and the preceptee. The research also explored the importance of self-care and modeling self-care for the preceptees.

“This was a great opportunity to share and discuss precepting with other nurse practitioner preceptors,” said Lashley, track coordinator for Lee’s Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) program and an assistant professor of nursing. “I love that I have the ability to conduct research, share ideas, teach, and work as a nurse practitioner to give back to my community, as well as the ability to educate and prepare future nurses to continue to grow and give to their communities.”

Lashley joined the Lee faculty in 2020 as an assistant professor of nursing with 19 years of professional experience as a registered nurse and 13 years as a nurse practitioner. In addition to her training and professional experiences, Lashley has served as an adjunct clinical instructor at South University and as adjunct faculty for the Licensed Practical Nurse program at Central Georgia Technical College.

She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from the University of Alabama in 2021 and is a member of the American Nurses Association, the Chattanooga Area Nurses in Advanced Practice, and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners where she serves on the committee for Nurse Practitioner Education Enhancement and Sustainment Committee. Lashley also serves as an expert consultant with the American Association of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board and works as a medical hospitalist at Erlanger Behavioral Hospital.

“Dr. Lashley demonstrates professionalism in the role of an advanced practice nurse through her engagement with the AANP and dedication to scholarship,” said Dr. Amy Jo Perry, interim dean of Lee’s School of Nursing and an assistant professor of nursing. “Her presentation on mentoring and her consistent efforts to collaborate with FNPs across the nation show why our students benefit from having her as a role model.”

Lashley continues to research precepting, FNP curriculum and simulation, active learning techniques for the classroom and online, and obesity.

AANP empowers all nurse practitioners to advance accessible, person-centered, equitable, high-quality health care for diverse communities through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership. For more information about AANP, visit aanp.org.
