The Lee University Lady Flames volleyball team will host the seventh annual Volley for a Cure as a part of Homecoming 2013 festivities. The Lady Flames will face off against Gulf South Conference opponent Valdosta State on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. in the Walker Arena.

The goal of the event is to help raise awareness for breast cancer as well as raise money for the Mary Ellen Locher Foundation of Chattanooga. The foundation grants scholarships to college students with a parent affected by breast cancer. This year’s recipient will be given the scholarship between games on Friday evening.

Over the past seven years Volley for a Cure has been able to increase funds raised every year. Their goal for each year is to raise $20,000, which is up from their first goal of $10,000.

The fifth annual luncheon for breast cancer survivors will be held Thursday, Oct. 31 at 11:30 a.m. in the Lee Recreation Center. This year’s entertainment will feature “funny lady” Vonda Skelton. Skelton is a Christian motivational speaker, writer and actress. She has taught at writing conferences from Delaware to New Mexico and has presented her “Writing is Fun!” workshop to over 22,000 students in public and private schools.

This year’s theme is “Keep Calm and Volley for a Cure.” T-shirts are available for $5 for sizes YS-XL and $7 for sizes 2X and 3X and can be purchased on campus from the volleyball team, at games or at the Paul Conn Student Union. Shirts are also available at Plastic Surgery Clinic, Doctors Express, Gobble’s Automotive, Jenkins Deli, Cleveland Daily Banner, Farm House Restaurant and Bradley Central, Cleveland and Walker Valley high schools.

An effort is underway to break the record for the most people in pink shirts at the Volley for a Cure event.
