The Lee University Lady Flames volleyball team will host the eighth annual Volley for a Cure as a part of Homecoming 2014 festivities. The Lady Flames will face off against Christian Brothers University on Friday, Nov. 7 at 4:30 p.m. in the Walker Arena.

The goal of the event is to help raise awareness for breast cancer as well as to raise money for the Mary Ellen Locher Foundation of Chattanooga. The foundation grants scholarships to college students with a parent affected by breast cancer. This year’s recipient will be given the scholarship during the game on Friday.

“Volley for a Cure is the highlight of the year for the volleyball team. This is our time to give back to the community and especially those who have been affected by breast cancer,” said Coach Andrea Hudson. “Giving out a scholarship during the game to an unsuspecting family is always a joy. This year we want to make our survivors thankful and happy so our whole theme is happiness and celebration.”

Over the past eight years, Volley for a Cure has been able to increase funds raised every year. Their goal for this year is to raise more than $25,000. Efforts have already begun through t-shirt sales of over 9,000 shirts and through an activity called flocking, when plastic flamingos are strewn throughout the yards of community members and local businesses.

Other fundraising events include the fireman-doctor softball game, the Pink Bowl at Walker Valley High School, and the sixth annual luncheon for breast cancer survivors. The luncheon will be held Thursday, Nov. 6 from 11:30-1 p.m. in the DeVos Recreation Center and will include a performance by the Voices of Lee, Lee’s premier a cappella vocal ensemble. Under the direction of Danny Murray, Voices of Lee has captivated audiences worldwide through being featured at the international “Sing Conference,” on the debut season of NBC’s Sing-Off competition, and at the Shanghai International Music Festival in China this summer.

This year’s theme is “Happiness,” to celebrate those who have survived breast cancer. T-shirts are available for $5 for sizes YS-XL and $7 for sizes 2X and 3X and can be purchased on campus from the volleyball team, at games or at the Paul Conn Student Union. Shirts are also available at the Cleveland Daily Banner, Gobble’s Automotive, Jenkin’s Deli, The Plastic Surgery Clinic, and at Bradley Central, Cleveland, Ooltewah, and Walker Valley high schools.
