Ladies of Lee to present “Songs for the Journey”

Events, Music, News

Ladies of Lee will perform its spring concert “Songs for the Journey” on Tuesday, March 23, at 7:30 p.m. in Pangle Hall on Lee’s campus.

The Ladies will perform an eclectic mix of music including anthems, hymns, spirituals, a Black gospel number, a Broadway tune, and a contemporary Christian piece. The program includes both accompanied and a cappella pieces. According to Co-Director Dr. Randy Sheeks, the songs are pieces that have helped the Ladies throughout the challenging past year.

Within Ladies of Lee, there are two small ensembles, a contemporary worship band called Hilltop Worship and another small group of singers. The concert will feature special performances by each ensemble. Co-Director Debbie Sheeks will also be featured during the performance.

The Ladies of Lee, made up of 37 women this semester, has been under the direction of Randy and Debbie Sheeks since 2018. In the choir’s 55-year history, the group has performed in churches, schools, and other venues throughout the U.S. and abroad. Due to COVID-19 health and safety concerns, they have not been able to tour recently, but hope to resume touring in the fall.

“The choir has found a way to keep the spirit of the Ladies of Lee alive and well despite the challenges of the pandemic,” said Randy Sheeks. “There was no handbook for how to continue the Ladies of Lee legacy during COVID, yet these Ladies fo und a way to keep the vision of the group alive and even flourish in new and fresh ways.”

The ensemble frequently partners with groups to perform, serve, and donate in the U.S. and abroad. Because of health and safety restrictions, the entire choir has not been able to perform, but Hilltop Worship has travelled to lead worship in churches in Georgia, Virginia, and Alabama. The choir released a Valentine’s Day video of the song “Till There Was You” from the Broadway musical “The Music Man,” along with several other videos, during the fall 2020 semester.

Randy Sheeks is the coordinator of music and worship and an associate professor of church music at Lee. Debbie Sheeks is an adjunct professor of music, teaching private voice.

This concert is free and open to the public, but tickets are required due to limited seating. Tickets can be reserved at https://www.showclix.com/event/ladies-of-lee.
