Kersey, Tharp and Wofford Named 2013 Rymer Gold Winners

News

Devin Kersey, Caitlin Tharp, and Kelsey Wofford were named Gold winners for Lee University’s 2013 Rymer Scholarship awards. Three Gold Scholars, three Silver Scholars, and three Bronze Scholars were presented awards at the annual Rymer Scholars banquet at Lee on Thursday afternoon.

The scholarships are awarded annually by the Rymer Foundation, established by Hoyle Rymer and his father, the late Robert Rymer, honoring exceptional achievement and encouraging students to continue their education in Cleveland. Since the scholarship’s inception in 1990, over 180 Clevelanders have earned the title “Rymer Scholar.”

Nine finalists were chosen from the group of applicants for the 2013 awards. Principals from Bradley Central High School (BCHS), Cleveland High School (CHS), and Walker Valley High School (WVHS) nominated faculty representatives to serve on the selection committee alongside Lee University representatives.

The selection committee reviewed the applications and conducted interviews with each finalist. The winners were selected based on their leadership in extracurricular, athletic and church-based activities, high school rank and grade point average, college-board exam scores, and the interview.

As Rymer Gold Scholarship winners, Devin Kersey (BCHS), son of Greg and Angela Kersey, Caitlin Tharp (WVHS), daughter of Barry and Hope Tharp, and Kelsey Wofford (CHS), daughter of Curtis and Lisa Wofford will each receive a scholarship of $10,000.

This year’s Rymer Silver Scholarship winners are Kyle Davidson (WVHS), son of Todd and Lara Davidson, Hannah Long (WVHS), daughter of Delores and the late Mike Long, and Clay Parris (CHS), son of Dr. Randall and Rhonda Parris. They will each receive a scholarship of $5,000.

The Bronze Scholars will receive a scholarship of $2,000. These winners are Hanna Blessing (BCHS) daughter of Robert Blessing and Denise Morgan, Jordan Glover (WVHS), son of Gary and Nancy Glover, and Alexandra Hutt (CHS), daughter of Kurtis and Anna Hutt.

All monetary awards will be dispersed to the winners over a period of four years.
