Jung to Perform with CSO

Lee University School of Music faculty Dr. Joong Han (Jonathan) Jung will perform with the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra (CSO) on Thursday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m., under the direction of Dr. Kayoko Dan. The concert, “Ravel & Brahms,” will feature Jung on piano.
Jung and the CSO will perform pieces including contemporary composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s exploration of Peruvian culture, “Concertino Cusqueno,” Maurice Ravel’s lighthearted “Piano Concerto in G Major,” and Johannes Brahms’ joyful “Symphony No. 2.”
“I feel privileged to perform Ravel with the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra this month,” said Jung. “It is my first public, in-person performance since the beginning of the pandemic. It will be a night of good music in downtown Chattanooga.”
Jung is an assistant professor of piano at Lee. He has performed internationally with orchestras such as the Eastman Philharmonic Orchestra, Korean Philharmonic Orchestra of New Zealand, and University of Auckland Symphony Orchestra, and performed his own compositions at venues worldwide. Jung is also the director of the Lee University International Piano Festival and Competition, which takes place at Lee each summer. Prior to Lee, Jung taught at Jones County Junior College and Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
Jung received his Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in piano performance and literature, his Master of Arts in theory pedagogy, his Master of Music in piano performance and literature from the Eastman School of Music, and his Bachelor of Music in piano performance from the University of Auckland.
Dan is the music director of the CSO. She has served as assistant conductor of the Phoenix Symphony and music director of Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras. She is also the director of orchestral studies at Sam Houston State University and frequently teaches as a clinician and speaker at universities, high schools, youth orchestras, and regional orchestras throughout the country.
Dan received her DMA in conducting and her Master of Music Education from Arizona State University and her Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Texas.
The Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra is dedicated to the health and safety of its guests, performers, and the surrounding community. To mitigate the spread of COVID -19, attendees must show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours of the concert. All attendees, regardless of vaccination status, must wear a mask over their nose and mouth for the duration of the event.
