Heather Herring, a senior health science major and McNair Scholar, recently presented her research at the 128th Meeting of the Tennessee Academy of Science, which was held at Austin Peay State University.

Herring’s research, “Effects that Sleep has on Mental Health in College Science Students,” investigated the correlation between sleep and mental health in science students at Lee University. Herring used anonymous surveys to measure students’ mental health and sleep patterns and used the data from these surveys for her research.

Herring won first place in the Health and Medical Science division of poster presentations. This achievement was especially impressive because Herring was also the only undergraduate presenter in this division.

Dr. Joseph Daft, assistant professor of biology & health science at Lee, and Dr. Pamela Hobbs, lecturer of biology & health science at Lee, are Herring’s McNair faculty mentors and directed her in her research.
