Dr. Debbie Rosenow gives instructions for a STEAM bridge-building activity to visiting TAP students.

Lee University’s Helen DeVos College of Education (HDCOE) recently invited 18 Teaching as a Profession (TAP) students from local Bradley County Schools to participate in a morning of specially tailored events.

“We were honored to welcome Bradley County Schools TAP students to Lee University—not only to share opportunities within our program, but to encourage and affirm their decision to pursue a calling that will shape lives and strengthen communities for years to come,” said Dr. Shane Brown, director of Lee’s Teacher Education Program & Field Experiences and associate professor of elementary education.

TAP students collaborate with Lee education majors to construct a bridge during a hands-on STEM activity.

The high school juniors and seniors spent the morning in the HDCOE learning about Lee’s education program and receiving firsthand college experience. Following a Q&A breakfast, visiting students participated in two classes: Elementary Methods, where they completed a bridge-building STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activity, and Intro to Exceptionalities, where they observed student presentations.

“This event is a natural extension for the College of Education, as we have long partnered with the TAP classes in which these students participate,” said Brown. “Lee professors have been to their classes and taught, and I serve on the Career and Technical Education Board for the TAP program. While we would love for them to continue in their education at Lee, we also want to recruit for the profession and inspire them to continue in the education major at the higher level.”
