Dr. Debra Mimbs and Dr. Laura Singletary from Lee University’s Department of Natural Sciences and Mathematics recently received a grant from the Mathematical Association of America’s Dolciani Mathematics Enrichment Grant (DMEG) Program. The grant will fund a Lee University mathematics mentorship program for the 2014-2015 school year.

Lee’s mathematics professors will partner high school students in Cleveland, selected by the results of a mathematics competition held at Lee last month, with Lee undergraduate and graduate student mentors. The program is designed to provide enrichment activities beyond classroom coursework for students who show interest in mathematics.

“We are truly excited about this opportunity to present high school students with some interesting mathematics and university students with a chance to share their knowledge with those younger than them,” said Mimbs. “We desire to create a culture of mathematical appreciation within our community and see this as an important step in doing so.”

The Mathematical Association of America is the leading professional association in collegiate mathematics, the preeminent publisher of expository mathematics, the primary source of professional development programs for faculty, and the number one provider of resources for teaching and learning.

The Mary P. Dolciani Halloran Foundation has provided funding for the MAA to award grants for projects designed to develop mathematical enrichment programs for talented students in middle school or high school. It was established in 2009 as a pilot project to provide middle or high school students the opportunity for learning mathematics beyond the regular classroom curriculum. The goal of the DMEG is to interest students in the study of mathematics and encourage them to further their mathematical studies.
